Introduction

The photos in this gallery have been placed into albums to make it easier to search. We have photos for all the areas that were researched – Arrad Foot, Broughton Beck, Greenodd, Mansriggs, Newland, Rosside, Penny Bridge, Plumpton, Spark Bridge.  The historic photos from Cumbria Railways Association, Mike Davies-Shiel and Sankey do not cover all areas but the Residents and Local Photographers have albums for all areas.  All the owners of the photographs have given permission for them to be used on this site, however they are all under copyright.

Several photographers have contributed, lower down there is a section that describes each photographer’s work.

Cumbria Railways Association Collection

The aim of the association below is taken from the website; https://cumbrianrailways.org.uk

“The Cumbrian Railways Association was formed in 1976 in order to foster a widening interest in the railways of Cumbria. The founders were also concerned to draw together the work of those actively researching Cumbrian railway history, to encourage and co-ordinate their activities, and to provide a medium for publication of the results of their researches. At a time when the railway scene of the past was rapidly disappearing, a further objective was to record as much as possible of what remained from an earlier age.

Let's not forget what is happening in today's railways with privatisation, private companies running the railways and the track. We all remember the "old days" with affection in our own particular way but it is also important to remember what happens today is tomorrow's history. Recording the current railway scene is just as important to the group as researching history. We all have a role to play and a contribution to make to the Association; being in the right place at the right time with a camera or notebook can record a unique event for posterity.”

ENMO Heritage Project Permission

ENMO Parish Council have been given permission to display a selection of the photographs that relate to the areas being researched.  We have been asked to write that the Photographs show that we have been given permission by Cumbria Railways Association.

Mike Davies-Shiel Collection

The description below is written on Cumbria Industrial History Society web page https://www.cumbria-industries.org.uk/photo-collections

“Mike Davies-Shiel was the leading authority on many if not most aspects of Cumbria’s industrial history, about which he spent many years researching, writing, teaching, and inspiring others.

Over a period of 40 years Mike Davies-Shiel took many thousands of photos of buildings and machinery, places, and people.  To these he added photos of anything that would help in his research on a subject or place – maps, newspaper cuttings, paintings etc. Together they present a fascinating record of times gone by. All the photos were gifted to the Cumbria Industrial History Society after his death in 2009.

The collection contains more than 15,000 colour slides and some black-and-white photos. These have all now been catalogued and digitised, so that the originals can be safely stored by the Cumbria Archive Service.”

Low resolution copies of all the images are being added to the Cumbria Archive Service’s on-line catalogue CASCAT. For help with searching the collection click on Finding Photos.

Many of them are also being added to this website, to complement and illustrate the subjects covered.

Sankey Collection

On this site, we have a number of Photographs taken by Sankey family members.  The paragraph below is a brief summary describing the photography business, taken from the Signal Film and Media site.

“Edward Sankey had a remarkable life. He was the son of a horse-keeper brought up next to a dockside rail yard who became one of the region’s best-known photographers. Over 70 years, through which they witnessed massive industrial growth and two World Wars, Barrovian Edward and his sons, Raymond and Eric, dedicate their lives to capturing significant moments and everyday life in Barrow, Cumbria and the wider North West.”
